The weekend of April 26–27, 2025, in the City of Hampton, VA, was truly unforgettable, filled with a wide range of activities that brought the entire community together. It was inspiring to see participation from so many different neighborhoods, along with strong support from the Mayor, the City Manager, City Council Members, and City Staff. Everyone came together like one big family, creating an atmosphere of unity. The Unity Choir added to the weekend’s spirit, performing beautifully on both days. If you or anyone you know would like to join the Choir, be sure to stay tuned—announcements about auditions and sign-ups will be coming soon!
During the packed weekend, I had the opportunity to attend three remarkable events: the Mosaic Festival, the Reunion of Hope, and the Air Power Over Hampton Roads air show.
The City of Hampton’s Mosaic Festival, held on April 26 at Mill Point Park, was a vibrant celebration of global cultures. The festival featured live performances representing Indigenous Peoples, Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Music, dance, art, and a wide array of international cuisine created a colorful and welcoming environment. Interactive activities kept guests of all ages engaged, from hands-on crafts to cultural exhibits. Best of all, the event was free and accessible to everyone, fostering a deep sense of community and cultural appreciation.
On April 27, the City hosted the Reunion of Hope at Gosnold’s Hope Park to kick off Youth Violence Prevention Week. This emotional and uplifting event honored the lives lost to gun violence with orange ribbons symbolizing hope and remembrance. Families, community leaders, and residents came together to stand for peace and unity through faith, family, and purpose. Attendees enjoyed a day of free food, games, live music, and activities aimed at young people. Organized by the Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities, the event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of healing, resilience, and community connection.
Meanwhile, the Air Power Over Hampton Roads air show, held April 26–27 at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, delivered thrilling moments for aviation enthusiasts and families alike. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds headlined the show, along with awe-inspiring performances by the F-22 Raptor Demo Team, the Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet, the Army’s Golden Knights parachute team, and more. Crowds were treated to daring aerial maneuvers and state-of-the-art demonstrations. The weekend was marked by both excitement and solemnity, as it also honored the memory of aerobatic legend Rob Holland, who tragically passed during pre-show preparations. His legacy lived on through the spectacular aerial displays and a focus on inspiring future generations through STEM exhibits and family-friendly activities.
Altogether, the weekend reflected the heart and spirit of Hampton: a city rooted in resilience and unity. Each event, while different in theme and focus, contributed to a greater message of hope, strength, and community that will carry forward throughout the year, a city of peace.
