Pirates at Hampton City Council

The history of pirates in Hampton, Virginia, is deeply woven into the broader maritime history of the Chesapeake Bay. Located strategically at the mouth of the James River and the entrance to the Chesapeake, Hampton was a prime spot for piracy during the late 1600s and early 1700s, particularly during the Golden Age of Piracy.

Today, pirates paid a surprise visit to the Hampton City Council—yes, actual pirates! With tricorn hats, eye patches, and a flair for the dramatic, they brought a wave of maritime mischief and historic charm to city hall. The spirit of Blackbeard was alive and well as the council chambers turned into a playful port of call, reminding us that Hampton’s seafaring past is never too far away.

As usual, I was there to witness it all—pirates and all—and even had the pleasure of meeting them in person! History never feels too old when it’s welcomed with such charm and cheer.
