Representative Robert “Bobby” Scott has been a fixture in Virginia’s political landscape for over three decades. Since January 1993, Scott has represented Virginia’s 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, making him one of the longest-serving members of Congress from the Commonwealth. His tenure has been marked by strong electoral victories and consistent support from his constituents.
Notable General Election Challengers
Over the years, Bobby Scott has faced a number of Republican challengers in general elections but has consistently won by large margins:
1992: Defeated Republican Dan Jenkins with approximately 79%–21% after the creation of the majority-Black district.
1994: Secured re-election with around 79% of the vote against Republican Thomas Ward.
2004: Beat former state delegate and future Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears (R) by a margin of 69%–31%.
2010: Won over Chuck Smith (R), along with Libertarian and Independent challengers.
2012: Handily defeated Dean Longo (R) with 81%–19%.
2016: Overcame Marty Williams (R) by 67%–33%.
2020: Beat Marine veteran John Collick (R) with 68%–32%.
2022: Defeated veteran Terry Namkung (R) with 67%–33%.
2024: Won re-election against John Sitka III (R) by a margin of roughly 70%–30%.
Dawn Vazquez — Background and Aspirations
Recently, Dawn Vasquez, who identifies herself as a disabled veteran, shared with our local media Jbeltv (The Jbel Show) her aspirations as a prospective challenger to Congressman Bobby Scott. While Vazquez is not currently listed in any official campaign filings or Federal Election Commission (FEC) records, she has signaled her intent to run through social media.
Her Instagram profile (@dawnvasquez9999) describes her as a “Congressional Candidate third district Virginia.” The challenger also published a website https://www.dawnvasquezforcongress.com/
If Vazquez formally enters the race, she would represent an unusual independent challenge to Bobby Scott, whose seat has remained largely unthreatened for decades.
