A Victory Beyond the Scoreboard

From the Presidential Box, a friendly projection numbers game added extra excitement to the matchup. I asked fellow attendees to share their predictions for the final score: Congressman Bobby Scott (24–21), Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears (21–12), First Gentleman Demetri (27–17), Philip (24–10), Thomas (24–17), Josh (14–3), Ron (31–21), and my own projection (31–27). As it turned out, the game was even more thrilling than any of our guesses—the teams ended regulation tied, forcing overtime, where NSU sealed the victory with a final field goal: Norfolk State 34, Virginia State 31.
Beyond the action on the field and the powerful performance by the NSU band, what truly filled my heart with enthusiasm was the atmosphere in the box itself. Watching the game from that vantage point underscored how sports bring people together—students, alumni, board of visitors, longtime Spartan fans, and even elected officials from both sides of the political aisle. For those few hours, we were united: cheering, sharing food, and celebrating not only the game but also the spirit of community, higher education, and a brighter future.
